“Curtains”, the Kander and Ebb musical with a book by Rupert Holmes, had one of my favorite, stingingly resonant lines. The producer of a new musical was hollering at the show’s songwriters, demanding that they replace one of the songs. “And I want a brand NEW song”, he told them. “None of that 'Eine Kleine Trunk Musik'!”
Lately I’ve been thinking of all the songs in my own “trunk.”
I have a lifetime’s worth of songs in a tall metal file cabinet.
I have two sons. I would never have kept THEM locked in a drawer for decades.
I think it's time to let these other “children” out.
So starting July 9th, I'm going to release a piece of Trunk Musik every two weeks.
I’ll tell you a little about the song, who I wrote it with, why or when we wrote it.
Some will be raw demos, some more produced.
Some sung by me, some by other artists.
I hope they’ll touch you, strike a chord.
Maybe you'll want to sing one of them.
What matters is - they’ll be heard.
